Myanmar projects
Rohingya people in Myanmar continue to face persecution, discrimination, and danger because of decades of systemic exclusion and violent attacks.
Rohingya in Myanmar (Burma)
Crisis, Context & RAUK Advocacy
Rohingya people in Myanmar continue to face persecution, discrimination, and danger because of decades of systemic exclusion and violent attacks. Despite international attention, millions remain internally displaced, stateless, and at risk of further human rights abuses.
Rohingya Association UK (RAUK) monitors the evolving situation, supports advocacy for justice and protection, and works to amplify the voices of Rohingya communities affected by ongoing conflict and marginalisation.

The Ongoing Humanitarian and Security Crisis in Myanmar
The Rohingya have long been denied citizenship and basic rights under Myanmar’s laws, which has contributed to cycles of discrimination, violence, and displacement.
Recent Displacement Trends
- A major military crackdown in 2017 forced over 740,000 Rohingya to flee to Bangladesh, a mass displacement widely recognised as ethnic cleansing.
- Significant numbers remain within Myanmar, living in hazardous and restrictive conditions — especially in areas like Maungdaw, Buthidaung, Rathedaung, and Sittwe.
Conflict and Violence
Renewed clashes between armed groups and state forces have continued to fuel insecurity, causing additional displacement in 2024 and 2025.
The ongoing conflict has deepened vulnerabilities, restricted movement, and exacerbated the risk of further human rights violations against Rohingya civilians.
Citizenship
Statelessness & Systemic Discrimination
Under Myanmar’s 1982 Citizenship Law, most Rohingya are denied citizenship, rendering them stateless with limited access to education, healthcare, employment, and freedom of movement.
This legal exclusion has created systemic barriers that perpetuate poverty, marginalization, and insecurity for Rohingya communities within the country.

RAUK’s Response Advocacy, Awareness & Global Action
While RAUK does not operate direct field projects inside Myanmar due to access constraints, the organisation is actively engaged in advocacy, monitoring and global legal efforts to uphold Rohingya rights and hold perpetrators accountable.
Advocacy for Justice and Accountability
RAUK supports international legal processes that pursue accountability for crimes against humanity, including:
- Support for cases at the International Court of Justice (ICJ)
- Engagement with mechanisms such as the International Criminal Court (ICC)
These efforts aim to ensure perpetrators of atrocities are held to account and that justice mechanisms strengthen protections for Rohingya civilians.
Monitoring and Information Sharing
RAUK maintains an up-to-date information hub tracking developments in Myanmar — including displacement trends, human rights concerns, and policy decisions — to inform international advocacy and media engagement.
Partnering for Broader Influence
RAUK collaborates with civil society groups and human rights organisations to amplify Rohingya voices, contribute to joint statements, and influence global discussions on ethnic cleansing, genocide recognition, and repatriation frameworks.
Challenges
Humanitarian Challenges Inside Myanmar
Although direct RAUK field operations in Myanmar are not currently feasible, the humanitarian situation remains dire:
Challenge
Living Conditions
Many Rohingya in Arakan (Rakhine) State live in internally displaced persons (IDP) camps under severe restrictions on movement, services, and livelihood opportunities.
Challenge
Protection Concerns
Human rights groups have reported ongoing discrimination, hate speech, and violence against Rohingya civilians both in camps and surrounding communities.
Challenge
Access to Services
Statelessness and legal non-recognition severely limit access to healthcare, education, employment, and economic participation for Rohingya residents.
Advocacy
Why Advocacy Matters
Without sustained global advocacy and accountability efforts:
Discrimination and exclusion are likely to persist
Barriers to return and reintegration remain high
Legal protection for Rohingya civilians will remain limited
RAUK’s advocacy seeks to influence not just awareness but policy and legal outcomes that protect Rohingya rights and dignity.
What You Can Do to Support
Although RAUK’s primary advocacy work for Myanmar is legal and policy-focused, you can help amplify impact by:
Your support helps fund:
Research and documentation
Advocacy campaigns
Communications and awareness efforts
Despite these pressures, Malaysia remains a key destination for Rohingya refugees seeking safety and opportunity in Southeast Asia.
Commitment
RAUK’s Commitment to Myanmar
RAUK continues to:
Monitor developments in Myanmar/Burma
Advocate for justice, safety, and human rights for Rohingya communities
Partner with civil society to ensure informed global action
Our goal is to strengthen advocacy efforts so that one day Rohingya people can live with dignity, equality, and security in their ancestral land or as part of a safe and sustainable solution.
