Rohingya Support Projects in Bangladesh

Bangladesh hosts the world’s largest Rohingya refugee population — with over 1.1 million Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar camps and Bhasan Char. These families face daily hardship from overcrowding, limited access to services, and ongoing uncertainty about the future.

Rohingya Association UK (RAUK) supports communities in Bangladesh through targeted programmes that address both humanitarian needs and grassroots empowerment.

Why Our Work in Bangladesh Is Critical

Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh continue to live in overcrowded settlements under extremely challenging conditions. Limited access to education, healthcare, livelihoods, and protection has created long-term dependency on humanitarian support.

RAUK’s work in Bangladesh addresses both urgent humanitarian needs and longer-term community support, ensuring that vulnerable families are not left behind.

The Humanitarian Context in Bangladesh

The Humanitarian Context in Bangladesh

In Cox’s Bazar and Bhasan Char, Rohingya refugees live in massive settlements characterised by:

Overcrowded shelters and limited privacy

Scarce employment and livelihood opportunities

Inadequate infrastructure — in health, education, water and sanitation

Psychological challenges from past trauma and displacement

These conditions make Bangladesh one of the largest and most complex refugee crises in the world.

ERCB

RAUK’s Refugee-Led Response in Bangladesh

RAUK follows a refugee-led model, meaning that its programmes are designed, planned, and delivered by the Rohingya community itself. This empowers refugees to become active contributors rather than passive recipients.

Sports & Youth Engagement
  • RAUK organises sports activities and supplies essential sports materials for Rohingya youth.
  • These sessions promote physical health, mental wellbeing, teamwork, and leadership among children and young adults.
  • Participating in structured sports also creates safe spaces for social interaction and community bonding.

RAUK’s sports initiatives go beyond recreation — they are a vital tool for healing, protection, and youth development within refugee camps.

For Rohingya children and young people who have experienced displacement, trauma, and instability, organised sports provide a sense of normalcy and routine. Regular physical activity helps reduce stress, anxiety, and symptoms linked to trauma, while also encouraging discipline and emotional resilience.

Through football, cricket, and group-based physical activities, RAUK helps young refugees:

  • Develop leadership, cooperation, and conflict-resolution skills
  • Build confidence and self-esteem in a safe, structured environment
  • Stay engaged in positive activities that reduce exposure to harmful influences
  • Strengthen peer relationships and community bonds

Sports sessions also create inclusive spaces where boys and girls can participate respectfully, fostering mutual understanding and social cohesion within the camps.

By investing in sports, RAUK is not only supporting physical health but also nurturing future community leaders who carry values of teamwork, responsibility, and hope.

RAUK supports education and skills development initiatives that help Rohingya children and youth build essential knowledge, confidence, and practical abilities within the camps. Through informal learning, life skills, and basic vocational support, these programmes encourage self-reliance, personal growth, and long-term community resilience despite limited access to formal education.

  • RAUK provides one-off food support during periods of acute need.
  • These distributions help families who are facing the greatest vulnerability due to income insecurity or supply shortages.
  • RAUK delivers targeted support to individuals and families who face extreme hardship.
  • This includes small cash assistance and community-based referrals to reduce immediate stress and sustain dignity.

RAUK invests in the potential of Rohingya children by:

  • Encouraging young innovators to turn their ideas into services
  • Providing mentorship and platforms that nurture creativity
  • Helping children evolve into future leaders and entrepreneurs
This not only builds personal confidence but also seeds community-driven economic activity.
